De Lange Conference V
Frontiers of Medicine: Society, Pharmacology and Membrane Biology in the Genomic Era

Date: March 7-9, 2005
Sponsors: Rice University & The Gulf Coast Consortium for Membrane Biology

Conference V Registration

The Fifth De Lange Conference will be hosted at Rice University, Houston, Texas, on March 7-9, 2005. With the sequencing of the human genome, tremendous opportunities and challenges face our society on how we can best use this information to advance our basic understanding of biology and improve human health. In the forefront of this challenge is the science of pharmacology and the related effort to investigate the structure and function of membrane proteins and lipids, which form the drug-targeted boundary between cells and their environment. In addressing these issues, the De Lange Conference will focus on three interwoven themes: 1) the changing role of medicine in society; 2) the future of pharmacology; and 3) the structure and function of membrane proteins and lipids. Scientific and cultural leaders will discuss the genomic era challenge of how to use the new wealth of genetic information to understand the boundaries of cells and create new ways to apply this knowledge at the frontiers of medicine.

Who Should Attend?

This conference is designed for scientists and non-scientists alike.

  • Day 1 (March 7) is targeted to the members of the general public and scientists interested in the implications and challenges facing society as a result of the current fast-paced and seminal advances in biomedical science in the genomic era. Wide-ranging topics include: the practice of medicine, the training of bioscientists and clinicians, and the science of pharmacology.

  • Days 2 and 3 (March 8 - 9) focus on cutting-edge advances in biomembrane research, including the structure and function of membrane proteins and lipids, that fuel biomedical technology at the dawn of our new age of molecular medicine.
